Whatuni survey: Friday 6 March

Uni Compare survey: Thursday 30 April

See what some of our previous students have said:

“I studied my undergraduate at Edge Hill and because of the support from tutors and the services provided I wanted to complete my PGCE there. This was definitely the right choice, the course has provided brilliant CPD training like first aid courses and child protection courses as well as opportunities to visit a Forest School and SEND schools – these opportunities will help me get a teaching job at the end of the year. Every school placement I have had here, I’ve absolutely loved and even had the opportunity to do a distance placement and visited the Isle of Man for 6 weeks with paid transport and accommodation. I would definitely recommend anyone to study their PGCE at Edge Hill.”

“The best aspect of Edge Hill University for me is the campus itself. The gorgeous gardens and communal areas make being at University a very pleasant experience. Staff are also extremely supportive, and there are plenty of tools and resources in place to support students with their various needs and problems, should they have any.”

– Diana Wiedemann, Whatuni

“I love it at Edge Hill. The campus has a very warm and friendly atmosphere an everyone is so nice. The accommodation is brilliant and it’s very easy to get into Ormskirk centre when living on campus. I love my course and there is so much support available should you need it both academically and with living away from home for the first time.”

– Alice, Whatuni

“My transition to Edge Hill was made easy and the staff / student body are incredible. They have a variety of societies, events and opportunities to try new skills. There is lots of encouragement to take part and there is lots of support offered for anything you could imagine or need.”

Amber N, Uni Compare

“Edge Hill university campus is where I lived for a year. This was one of the most memorable years of my life and was place I called home for a time. My lecturers were always a 5 minute walk away during the working week. With campus becoming all the busy at the weekend with such an amazing nightlife buzz. The academic staff and lecturers were always so helpful and supportive for that year and the rest of the years of my degree. I look back at Edge Hill and see nothing but happy memories, new beginnings, and lifelong treasured friendships.”

Harry G, Uni Compare

The course is taught in a perfect ratio of contact and non contact hours, the placement is a perfect element of the course, giving us the opportunity to explore specialist schools and learning with children with SEND. The courses modules fit perfectly with the prospects of the degree, and as someone’s who’s been wanting to study this for a while it has met my expectations.

We know that university is more than just a place to study. It’s a place where you’ll learn, thrive and be given the chance to be yourself. So what’s it like to be a student at Edge Hill?

Why should I choose Edge Hill?

You’ll be part of a vibrant community of students, academic and support staff who will work tirelessly to help you reach your goals. We’re a university where tutors know your name, and your learning is tailored to you.

All our courses are designed to meet the needs of employers in the North West and beyond. You’ll join the 96.2% of graduates who are employed or in further study within 15 months of graduating (Graduate Outcomes data released in 2025).

Find your people

When you start university, you’ll be meeting a new group of people for the first time, and we understand it can be pretty daunting. At Edge Hill, you won’t be short of opportunities to meet people with shared interests, whether that’s on your course or beyond. In fact, we have a dedicated Student Life Team who organise events, days out, and parties to help you settle in, have fun and make friends.

If you’re planning to live on campus, you’ll see plenty of our Campus Connectors. You’ll recognise them around campus in their purple hoodies, and they’re an excellent source of information and advice on all things Edge Hill. They’ll also help you get to know your new flatmates through in-person events.

Our Student Life portal gives students access to everything that’s going on in one place, so you never miss a thing. From club nights in our SU to theatre performances and Free Film Fridays, there’s always something to do.

What’s happening on campus?

Our Students’ Union team organise a range of events, like Bingo Lingo, Karaoke Fridays, and club nights with guest DJs like Danny Howard. Wednesday night socials always have exciting themes, from Taylor Swift to Western-style hoedown. And you can unleash your creativity with events like Sip and Paint. The setting for many of our events? Our £8.4m Students’ Union, built just for you.

We’ve got 60 acres of sports and leisure facilities on campus. Become part of a team and play in social leagues, or simply keep fit around your studies. Our heavily discounted gym membership includes access to our gym, fitness classes and swimming pool. Visit ehu.ac.uk/edgehillsport

Currently we have over 100 societies on offer. These range from Anime to Run Club, plus lots of academic societies too. And if you can’t find something that suits you, you can start your very own. Discover more at edgehillsu.org.uk

From comedy, music and movies to live theatre and dance, you’ll find it all in our on-campus Arts Centre. Free Film Fridays take place every week for Edge Hill students. Take a look at our programme of events at ehu.ac.uk/artscentre.

Living on campus vs commuting

You could still be deciding whether to live at university or commute from home. To help you make the best decision for you we’ve looked at the benefits of moving into halls or living at home.

We offer a place in our halls of residence to all new UK first-year undergraduate students who are starting a full-time programme in September 2026, subject to availability. Simply make us your Firm choice and apply for a place in halls before the accommodation application deadline. You can even pick your room of choice, subject to availability.

How to apply for on-campus accommodation

  • Make Edge Hill your Firm choice on UCAS.
  • Choose your room in Halls using the email sent to you by the Edge Hill Accommodation Team. You can book a room any time up to the end of May, subject to availability. Popular halls will fill up fast, so we recommend booking as early as possible to get the room of your choice.
  • Once you’ve reserved your room, you have 14 days to sign your Residential License Agreement and pay your £150 Advanced Residence Fee. This will secure your room.

“I love the independence I’ve gained from moving away from home. My cooking abilities have improved massively, and I’ve become much more creative with my meals. My flatmates and I often cook our meals together and socialise in the common room a lot. Edge Hill feels like a home away from home.”

Discover Ormskirk and beyond

Independent shops. Quirky bars. Market days. Ormskirk’s got it all. No matter what you like to do in your spare time, you won’t be disappointed with what Ormskirk can offer you. And its just a 10-minute walk or 3-minute bus ride on our free Edge Link bus.

Students talking together while walking through Ormskirk town centre

“For me, Ormskirk has everything a student could need. While it might seem like a small, quaint town there’s a great mix of shops, bars, and coffee spots, plus excellent transport links and affordable student housing – all just a stone’s throw from Edge Hill.”

Kien

BSc (Hons) Professional Policing

From our Ormskirk campus, you’re within easy reach of vibrant cities, glorious coastlines and tranquil areas of natural beauty. We’re just a 30-minute train ride to Liverpool direct from Ormskirk, so you can easily visit the city known for its music, sport and culture. And don’t forget, the bustling city of Manchester is only a short train ride away too.

Connecting with nature

If you fancy getting out in the open air, you could take a picnic to Formby or Crosby beach or explore the Lake District. You’ll be spoilt for choice.

Enjoy the peaceful lakeside view and take some time out to relax. Taking a walk around campus or choosing a quiet spot to study out in the fresh air can help improve your wellbeing.

You could watch the ducks, rabbits or squirrels, or even our own campus cat. We ensure our landscaped areas are planted in the right way, enhancing the environment and provided habitat for the abundant wildlife.

A sustainable campus

We work hard to manage the impact of travel to and from the University and to reduce the size of our carbon footprint.

Each year when students are due to move out of their on-campus accommodation, our sustainability team organise the Big Campus Clear Out. Unwanted food, household items and clothing are all collected and donated to local charities, like the Tawd Vale Lions Club and Trussell Trust food banks. It’s a great way to give back to those in need while reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill. Many of our students even help out as volunteers.

In 2025, three of our student-led societies organised The Green Fair with an aim to educate their peers on how they can become more sustainable. This brought together local charities, businesses and university departments to speak about their own efforts to become more ‘green’.

Getting you career ready

Throughout your degree we have your career goals in mind. We’ll provide you with the right support, facilities and employability opportunities so when you graduate you feel ready to take the next step towards your dream job.

  • Your Personal Tutor will support you and be your ‘go to’ person for academic and personal advice and guidance.
  • There’s no substitute for practising your skills before you take them out in the workplace. We’ve invested in immersive environments that put your learning into context.
  • You can enhance your learning inside and outside of the classroom. You’ll take part in trips and fieldwork, hear from guest speakers and benefit from industry connections. Depending on which course you’re studying, you may also take part in a work placement, where you can practise your new skills in the real world.
  • Our Careers Team are there to help you enhance your employability, perfect your CV, and prepare you for job applications and interview.
  • We have a range of other support teams on campus should you need a helping hand during your time here, from money advice to wellbeing

“Edge Hill’s employability support has been key to securing my future. Without it, I wouldn’t have had the chance to learn on the job at such a great company. It’s encouraged me to reflect on what I’ve learned and think about how I can improve. It’s given me confidence and strengthened my desire to succeed.”

They discuss the challenges of studying for a degree while competing at an elite sporting level.

How would you feel if we told you that some of our sport students were in the running to compete at a World Cup in 2026?

Impressed? No doubt. Surprised? Maybe. Disbelieving? Possibly. Still, it’s true. Some of our BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Science students are vying for squad places at the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. Form and injuries permitting, they could well be heading for Australia, home of the current holders, and Papua New Guinea next year.

It would be a fitting high note for four of our students who have had a pretty eventful 2025.

Isabel Rowe, Ruby Hunter and Jenna Foubister played for the triumphant Wigan Warriors in the Women’s Super League Grand Final in October 2025, while Beri Salihi rucked and rolled as a fullback for defeated finalists St Helens.

It was a surreal experience, said halfback Isabel – Izzy to friends and team-mates:

Izzy Rowe in action for Wigan Warriors rugby league football club.

“To play for my childhood club with my best mates in front of a record crowd was a dream. It was a lot of pressure but the whole team really helped to calm nerves and winning felt amazing. I get on well with the Saints girls so thankfully there’s no rivalry off the field.”

Beri was playing in her second grand final. She found she could enjoy this one more, having learned to conquer the nerves and manage the pressure of a big occasion:

“Of course there was rivalry, but the game meant so much to me. Wigan was my old team and a lot of the girls I’ve grown up playing with and against. On the pitch we all wanted to do everything we could to allow our team to win, but off the pitch we’re all actually good friends.”

Beri isn’t just paying lip service to friendship and camaraderie – she cites meeting new friends as a highlight of her University experience. And she’ll be joining Izzy, Ruby and Jenna next season, reuniting with Wigan in the hope that it’ll be a springboard for a push into the full World Cup squad. It would be the next step after representing feeder squad England Knights.

Hopefully she’ll be joining Izzy, who made her England debut at 17. Voted Super League Young Player of The Year in 2025 Izzy also has her sights set on 2026 and the World Cup, where she’ll get a better idea of the rugby league life down under, a place she’d like to ply her trade at some point in her burgeoning career.

But first she wants to complete her degree in Sport & Exercise Science at Edge Hill University, alongside her fellow Super League grand finalists, where Izzy, Beri, Ruby and Jenna have also been awarded Sports Scholarships in recognition of their sporting talent, dedication and achievements. Their reward is money towards training and competition expenses, along with other sports-related benefits such as free access to Edge Hill’s sports facilities and personal training. We want to give all our students every opportunity to maximise their potential, and scholarships across a range of categories help us to help you.

The course itself looks at human performance from a scientific perspective, and takes advantage of the University’s extensive resources to enable students to apply theory to practice. Students get hands-on in labs dedicated to physiology, biomechanics, psychology, strength & conditioning, and functional rehabilitation, while on-site facilities – sports halls, pitches, athletics track, swimming pool, gym – allow students to experiment in the arena of real life.

Beri is very clear this degree ticked all the boxes:

Beri Salihi is congratulated by team-mates playing for St Helens RLFC.

“I want to study sport and exercise science to improve as an athlete and learn how to get the best out of my career in sport. I’ve suffered from injuries, concussions, gone through tough times such as losing finals or being under pressure. I’ve had to learn about nutrition and strength and conditioning to be able to compete in the women’s super league at 17. But I’ve also seen the younger girls I’ve inspired so far in my rugby league journey, and I hope to be able to use my degree to help grow the women’s game.”

Both Izzy and Beri admit that juggling their rugby with a full-time undergraduate degree is not straightforward. But I guess no-one thinks achieving professional-level sporting success is going to be a walk in the park.

It’s all about the routine, staying organised, say Izzy and Beri, sneaking in gym sessions between study breaks. It helps that Edge Hill’s sports facilities are so accessible – it’s five minutes from lecture theatre too gym (for a professional athlete, anyway).

Born and bred in this corner of the north west, aka Rugby League-land, the sport is in their DNA.

Izzy grew up a Wigan fan, most likely the men’s team. Undeterred, she began her ascent to the top ranks of the women’s game with Ashton Bears, before making the step up with Wigan Warriors.

Six miles down the road in Newton-le-Willows, Beri was locked in a sporting love triangle, with rugby (both codes), football and athletics all competing for her affections. She fully converted to egg-chasing, though, and began her own journey in rugby league stronghold St Helens. Thatto Heath led to Leigh Miners, before Wigan Warriors’ academy, a first-team debut and two major semi-finals, before her move back to St Helens.

Izzy also excelled, winning a domestic treble with Wigan, before that teenage England debut. Beri meanwhile won a Challenge Cup with Saints in 2024, but narrowly missed out on the Women’s Super League title.

So what advice would they give to any girls looking to get into rugby?

“Give it a go,” encourages Izzy. “You never know how it’s going to go. Don’t feel intimidated, just give it 100%. I’ve met some of the best people in my life through playing the sport.”

“Remember to have fun and enjoy it,” adds Beri. “Rugby league is for anyone and it’s important to do what you love. Enjoying it will you get the best out of you.”

And she’s taking her own advice, it seems:

“For the 2026 season I’ve moved back to Wigan Warriors,” continues Beri. “I know breaking into this Wigan side won’t be easy after the fantastic season they’ve had, but it’s a challenge I’m excited for and one I know will bring out the best in me.”

Final countdown: Beri walks out with her St Helens team-mates for the Super League Final
Photograph: Katie Richardson (Instagram: @photographer_katier)

It’s testament to Beri’s ambition and competitive spirit that the 2025 season – one in which the team made it to major finals and came second in the league – she describes as ‘a difficult year’. Playing against – and studying alongside – Izzy, Ruby and Jenna has clearly pressed certain buttons as she chases that winner’s medal.

With no fears about peaking too soon, both players just want to be able to continue to play high calibre rugby, preferably leading to more shiny rewards. But for now they’re focused on that World Cup.

But they continue to keep their eyes on the other prize – a graduation certificate. With a BSc (Hons) in Sport & Exercise Science Izzy has her mind set on a career in sport biomechanics or psychology – and managing her own gym is a longer term dream. Beri would like to give back to the game that helped shape her, combining her degree with pro sport experience as a sport scientist, preferably for a Women’s Super League team.

But whether or not we’re welcoming World Cup winners back to University next year, we’re already celebrating the talent, guts, determination and success of students who stand out from the pack.
