How to make your money go further at university

Learning how to manage your money is a rite of passage into adulthood. And there’s no better time than the present to think about how you’ll fund your way through the next few years of study.

We don’t want money worries to be a barrier to your success. So, we spoke to some of our students to get their advice on how to make your money go further at university.

1. Set a weekly budget

Have an idea of how much you will have available to spend each week. This will help you avoid blowing your student loan early. Start by making a list of your expected monthly income. This would include any loans or part-time work. And then list your expenses including food, bills, library fees etc. From this you can work out how much you will have left over to spend on leisure activities each week.

“I set up two accounts; one for the full loan and then another where I paid myself every Monday. I looked at the number of weeks before the next loan, decided on a budget and transferred that money each week. It sounds simple but my other advice is to live by your means. If you know you can’t afford to do something, don’t. I was also able to get a part time job and that really helped.”

Adam, BA (Hons) Film & Television Production
BA (Hons) Film & Television Production student, Adam

You can use budgeting apps to keep check of your bank balance and track your spending habits. Make sure you deal with any bills right away too, rather than letting them pile up.

2. Get a student bank account

Choosing the right bank account is a key step in managing your money. The main things to look out for in a student account are:

 • Overdraft fees – find out how much you can borrow and if there are any charges. Some may charge interest whilst others are interest free for students.
 • Withdrawal fees – some banks charge you for taking money out, so look out for any hidden costs.
 • Interest paid on your balance – look for an account that pays on your money when you are in credit. Every penny counts.

“I found that plenty of banks offer brilliant deals to students who open a new account with them. These can be cash gifts for using your debit card or switching banks, 0% overdraft rates or a free 16-25 Railcard. Make sure you shop around before you get to university and check the eligibility criteria to make sure it’s the right account for you.”

Rachel Merrill, BA (Hons) Musical Theatre

3. Get a student railcard

Speaking of Railcards, if you don’t get one with your bank account then it’s definitely something to consider getting. They can help save you a ton of cash if you regularly use the train, either commuting to university or to visit friends or family. The National Rail young person’s railcard costs £30 a year and saves you a third on rail ticket prices.

Edge Hill University is right in the heart of the North West with great links to major norther cities like Liverpool and Preston. With a railcard, you can explore the region and save money at the same time.

4. Spend wisely on the basics

It’s no good setting a budget if you don’t stick to it once you get to university. Try to avoid overspending by saving money where you can on essentials like your food shop and transport.

Shop around for bargains and consider learning how to cook a few basic meals to avoid relying on takeaways. Batch cooking with your flatmates is also a great way to save money on food. We have put together some downloadable recipe cards to inspire your next meal preparation.

You and your flatmates could also club together to buy household essentials like kitchen roll and cleaning products. Go for value brands and shop locally when you can.

“Make sure you understand what you have to spend, in a week, a month, a semester. When it comes to food shopping, I save my money by eating cheaply – own brands are not an issue – and batch cooking. I also walk everywhere. It means I can go out to social or take a trip to the beach. If you feel like you’re missing out, don’t worry and don’t compare. Not everyone is able to do absolutely everything and you’ll find other ways of having fun.”

Eleanor, BA (Hons) Sociology
BA (Hons) Sociology, Eleanor

5. Take advantage of student discounts

We know that university is also about having fun. So when you do go out or treat yourself, make sure you benefit from the discounts available to you in shops, restaurants and on transport. Sign up to sites like UNiDAYS and Student Beans for online discounts and get a TOTUM card or use your student ID in-store to make some serious savings.

Once you get the hang of prioritising, managing your money gets easier. But it’s also a good idea to treat yourself, for example if you get a decent amount of work completed. Taking time out with friends can be a great incentive and can give you motivation to work harder.”

1. Great value accommodation

And connect with other Edge Hill students to find housemates.

At Edge Hill, we have a dedicated Careers Corner in Catalyst where students can drop in to speak with one of our advisers. The Careers Portal also advertises different types of opportunities for students in the local area. As well as ways you can earn extra cash working on campus. Opportunities include working as a Student Guide or Online Ambassador as well as casual roles in departments.

“I applied for, and was successful in gaining, a part time job via the Target Connect service run by the Edge Hill Careers team. I also was also successful in obtaining another role as a video editor which came about thanks to an email sent out by my department.”

Adam, BA (Hons) Film and Television Production

3. Free Commuter Breakfasts

If you’re a commuting student, you can also start your day right with a free hot drink and breakfast item. Just head to the Creative Edge foyer each Tuesday and Thursday between 8-9am and show your UniCard.

4. Travel and parking

Catch our free EdgeLink bus for a direct link between campus and Ormskirk bus station. Once you arrive in Ormskirk, you will also be a short walk from the train station. Making it easy to explore further afield.

Or overcoming adversity and inspiring others. Our scholarships recognise and celebrate your determination and commitment, with awards up to £2,000..

Our Thrive Fund is also available to Thive eligible students. Offering financial support to help you take part in employment-enhancing activities.”

6. Free laptop loans

All have access to the University network and online file storage, including most software available from the University. These can be loaned for up to two weeks, or you can request a longer-term loan.

If you’ve received an offer to study with us, then you should’ve received your invitation to attend one of our offer holder days. If not, don’t worry, it’ll be on its way to you soon. Join us to experience a day in the life of an Edge Hill student studying your course and read on to see what other exciting things you can do on the day.

1. Imagine yourself on your course

Students working together in a classroom setting with materials on desk

The most important part of your visit will be attending your subject session. It’s where you’ll get a real taste of what it’ll be like to study your course and get a true experience of what it’s like to be a university student. It’s here where you’ll meet the tutors who’ll teach you on your course and they are holding drop-in sessions too where you can ask any questions you might have to our lecturers and current students. You can discover more about the modules you’ll get to learn once you’re here while immersing yourself in the facilities that’ll bring your learning to life.

2. Making new friends

Another important and unique part about your offer holder day is that you’ll meet other applicants that have received an offer in the same subject area as you. So, you’ll be sat alongside those that could be on your course when you become a student with us. It’s a great opportunity to meet and make new friends before you even arrive. Ensuring your transition to university life feels easier knowing you’ll see some familiar faces.

3. Explore our picturesque campus

Image of campus with Catalyst as the focus.

Familiarise yourself with your surroundings. Take a campus tour led by one of our students. They’ll give you an insight into what happens in each building and you’ll be able to pick out your favourite places to study and relax before you start your studies. As you’re exploring campus, think about how you feel in these surroundings. Do you feel like this is the place where you’ll be supported throughout your journey? And is this the space you want to be surrounded with?

4. Deciding where to live

Offer Holder Days are a great opportunity to think more about whether you want to live on campus or commute. You can take a self-guided tour of our award-winning accommodation to find the place that feels like home and explore all of our halls to choose the one that’s right for you. Imagine yourself moving in with all your favourite home comforts and picture yourself making new memories with your new flatmates.

Planning to commute instead? Make sure to take a campus tour so you can see our amazing facilities for yourself and our students will share their favourite spots. Staff will be happy to chat with you about the facilities exclusively for commuting students too, and tell you about our free commuter breakfasts.

Wherever you decide to live, you’re fully supported – so don’t forget to visit our student experience fair too where you can meet and chat with a variety of teams from across the University.

5. Meet our students

Image of two student guides chatting whilst helping visitors during open day

You’ll meet students who are already studying your course who’ll be able to give you an insight into what to expect when you start your degree programme and about anything related to student life. If you’re viewing our accommodation, you’ll be able to speak to students who either live, or have lived, in on-campus accommodation. So you can hear first-hand experiences from those that have recently been in your position.

Don’t forget, you’re not alone. Our students understand just how you’re feeling. If you have any worries about fitting in, making friends or getting involved with activities, our students can reassure you that you’ll be joining a welcoming community. A community that you’ll feel a part of from day one.

Look out for your invite arriving in the post. Or in your email inbox. And make sure to book your place. Alternatively, email think@edgehill.ac.uk and a member of the team will be able to help you.

While researching which universities to apply for, you will be invited to open days which usually run in Summer and Autumn, but are they really that important?

Our answer, absolutely!

While it’s great to take virtual tours from the comfort of your own home, and there’s lots of information online – these can only tell you so much. Nothing can replace the feeling of walking on campus and seeing it all for yourself.

Here are just some of the reasons that it’s important to attend an open day for your chosen universities. Don’t forget we offer support with travel expenses so nothing holds you back from coming to see us.

It’s your new community

Whether you’re living on or off campus, your university will be your community for the next 3 years. It’s important that you feel at home there and can visualise yourself being a part of your chosen university – which is difficult to do without visiting it for yourself.

An an Edge Hill open day, you’ll feel the buzz of our campus as soon as you get here. On open days our buildings are full of staff and students who are ready to welcome you onto campus and give you a taste of what life here is like – and we encourage our visitors to ask us anything so they can make an informed decision on where to apply.

A group of students walking across campus.

It can spark exciting conversations

By being at an open day, you can talk to lecturers and current students and chat about your chosen subject or course and life at Edge Hill. These conversations can lead to you finding out more information you might not have discovered online, help you get inspired and excited about your future course, or even open your eyes to career paths and opportunities you’d not even considered!

At our open days, we run drop ins throughout the day with our academic staff so you can come along and chat to them in a more informal setting. Our support teams are also available throughout the day on a drop in basis in the Student Experience fair too, where you can talk to staff about everything from budgeting and access programmes through to clubs, societies and student life.

Students chatting in their university accommodation bedroom.

See your future home

Moving to university is a big step and if you’re thinking about moving away from home, seeing where you’d be living can help ease that transition for both you and your supporters. Edge Hill’s open days include drop ins for each of our halls of residence.

You can drop in and look around as many as you like, and spend time weighing up which accommodation option is right for your budget and needs.

Plus our accommodation team are available throughout the day to answer any of your questions.

Get practical help with your application

Open days don’t just give you insights into what student life would be like, they can also help you with the application process! There’s dedicated sessions running throughout the day on how to write a standout personal statement, and our “Discover your first steps to university: A guide for students and families” talk which provides guidance on the whole application process (great if your supporters didn’t go to university).

Alongside these sessions, we’ve also got our Admissions team drop in running throughout the day so you can ask any questions about applying to Edge Hill or talk about entry requirements or our fair entry criteria. If there’s anything on your mind with your application, they can help you work through it.

Find your place at an Edge Hill open day

An open day isn’t just an event; it’s your chance to see, hear, feel, and understand what studying at Edge Hill could really be like. It’s an essential part of the application process, and will give you invaluable information on your chosen course and the university as a whole.

We understand there might be barriers holding you back from attending so we’ve put together our travel reimbursement to help you with travel costs, a quiet room for those who might need to take some time away to reflect while navigating a new environment. We’ve also got free parking on campus or a free bus service running from Ormskirk Bus Station to help you get here.

We hope to see you at an open day soon!

There are now over 300 Edge Hill detailed access guides on the advocacy organisation’s website, offering accurate, up-to-date information on access to buildings, teaching spaces, libraries, sports facilities and accommodation, and routes across the campus.

Designed to support a wide range of access needs, the guides were created through a thorough assessment and are designed to assist people with a wide range of access needs.

Adrian smiles at the camera against a green background.

Adrian McGillion, Director of Facilities Management at Edge Hill, said: “We believe an outstanding campus environment is one where everyone feels welcome, valued and empowered to access all that university life has to offer.

“These new AccessAble guides are a vital step forward in ensuring our spaces are inclusive and welcoming by design, supporting students, staff and visitors to navigate our campus with confidence.

“As highlighted by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, true accessibility means placing the needs of all users at the heart of our thinking, and that’s exactly what these guides help us achieve.”

Each guide offers comprehensive information and photographs covering everything from parking facilities and hearing loops, to walking distances and accessible toilets.

Dr Gregory Burke, Founder and Executive Chair of AccessAble, said: “Edge Hill University has worked closely with us to ensure that comprehensive, accurate accessibility information for the campus is readily available. This is vital for disabled students, staff and visitors and ultimately benefits the entire university community.

“The collaboration is part of our continued efforts to remove barriers within higher education and to support a more inclusive and equitable experience for all.”

The post Offer holder days vs open days – what’s the difference? appeared first on Edge Hill University.

]]>

Offer holder days are exclusively for applicants who have received an offer from their chosen universities. Whereas open days are designed for prospective students. They provide general university and course information to help prospective students decide which university to apply to.

What are offer holder days?

A student chats to a member of staff about a Business course at an Edge Hill offer holder day

Offer holder days are different to open days. They’re more tailored to you. They are exclusively for applicants who have received an offer from Edge Hill University. It’s all about finding out about your course, and what opportunities are available to you.

What really sets offer holder days apart from open days is the subject taster sessions. You will:

 • gain further understanding of what a day studying at Edge Hill University is like
 • explore your module options and start to visualise your first year
 • find out about the course from current students and tutors
 • become familiar with the learning environment, rooms and buildings on campus

The benefits of an offer holder day

Subject taster sessions

You might be wondering what studying at university is like. Whereas open days explore a wide variety of courses, subject taster sessions are a chance for you to attend a class in your chosen subject. Learn from one of your future tutors. Connect with likeminded people. You’ll be with your future classmates, and don’t forget, you’ll all be in the same boat. Get to know them and ask them why they’re considering the university. The taster session will give you a real flavour of what it’s like to be a university student.

Although you can discuss courses with a variety of people on an open day, you won’t experience the same level of detail as an offer holder day subject taster session provides.

Meet your tutors

After your subject taster session, you’ll get the chance to meet the tutors. During the session, you can leave any nerves at the door. It’s an exciting opportunity to chat to your future tutors and ask them questions. That’s what they’re there for, and they welcome new students every year.

Explore the campus

Don’t worry, you’ll still get the chance to explore the campus at an offer holder day. Similarly to an open day, we offer campus and accommodation tours at our offer holder days. Take a look around the campus facilities. Find out what the accommodation is like, and how close they’ll be to your lectures.

Chat with students

At an Edge Hill offer holder day, you can chat to anyone in a purple bib or top throughout the day. They’ll be happy to answer your questions or point you in the right direction.

Not only will you have the chance to talk to staff, but you can chat with students too. Chat with current students who are studying the course you are interested in. They’ll be around during, and after, the subject taster session.

Student guides will also be around on the day to guide you and answer your questions. At Edge Hill, student guides are students currently studying at the University. Ask them what they honestly think about studying here. You might want to know what they study, or if they live on campus and how they find it. What are open days?

An open day is a chance to explore universities first hand. When you attend an open day, you might not have applied to any universities yet. Or you might be trying to decide which university to accept an offer from. An open day can help you make a decision on which university is right for you.

At an Edge Hill University open day, you’ll be able to explore the campus, meet our students and chat to staff. It’s all about getting answers to your questions. If you aren’t sure about attending an open day, take a look at our top 10 reasons to attend an open day.

After you’ve attended an open day, you’ll be able to make a decision with confidence. Discover open days at Edge Hill University.

Benefits of open days

Open days are a great way to get an overall feel for Edge Hill. You can explore the campus and accommodation, chat to staff and students about studying at the University, and explore the surrounding area. They are not as tailored as offer holder days and you can enjoy the day at your own pace. Whether you choose to come alone or with your family or support network there will be lots to get involved with on the day from a bustling careers fair to a guided campus tour.
