Code of Practice for Research

This Code of Practice (the Code) sets out the guiding principles and standards of good practice in research across all subject disciplines and fields of study in the University. The Code applies to all those undertaking research on the University’s premises using its facilities, or on behalf of, or under the auspices of the University. This includes staff, students, visiting or emeritus staff, associates, honorary or clinical contract holders, contractors and consultants. The Code requires that all researchers adhere to the highest standards of performance and ethical conduct.

Code of Practice for the Investigation of Research Misconduct

Intellectual Property Policy

This policy addresses how the Edge Hill University (the University) manages Intellectual Property (IP) generated by its employees, students or by third parties related to the organisation. Sections 5.7 to 5.11 deal specifically with IP generated by students. The University acknowledges that students will normally own the IP for works they produce. However, in relation to any works students submit for assessment, the University retains the right to keep the submission, although for some types of works submitted by students for assessment it will not be possible to maintain a copy (such as artworks). In a limited number of circumstances, students will not own the IP for the work they produce and this is detailed in section 5.9.

Surprising Terms

PhD Students are required to confirm that their works can be made publicly accessible through the University research repository (Pure).
In certain circumstances, students will not own the IP for the work they produce (as detailed in section 5.9 of the policy)

Policy on researching and handling materials or topics of a sensitive nature

Universities play a vital role in carrying out research on issues where security-sensitive, radical, illegal, or potentially sensitive topics and materials are relevant. This includes material and topics that fall under the Prevent agenda as required under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 (and 2019 update). It is a duty of the University to ensure research into sensitive, radical or extreme topics and materials, including chemicals or organisms that can be used as weapons, is carried out appropriately and with due regard to safeguarding the researcher(s) and others. In operating this policy, the University seeks to ensure that the freedom to pursue academic research is upheld, balanced with the need to protect both staff and students, and to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.

Research Ethics Policy

The policy is the University’s statement on our approach to the promotion and monitoring of ethics and integrity in the conduct of research. Its annex includes standard operating procedures for all research ethics committees in the University. The document is to support researchers to carry out their research to the highest ethical standards. This policy applies to anyone carrying out research sponsored by Edge Hill University, whether academic, professional services staff, students or visiting researchers.

Research integrity annual statements

In line with the requirements of the UK funder-endorsed Concordat to Support Research Integrity, the University’s Research and Innovation Committee reviews and approves an annual statement summarising how research integrity is promoted and supported, including details of related activities undertaken across the University. This statement also includes anonymised information about how allegations of misconduct in research have been assessed and investigated.
