As part of the launch Andrea will be sharing a video from Karen Falk, the Director of The Jim Henson Company Archive, talking about the work Andrea and the company have done together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" data-src=\"\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Andrea-Wright-portrait.jpg\" alt=\"Andrea Wright holding a book and smilling at the camera \" class=\"wp-image-310419 size-full lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Andrea-Wright-portrait-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Andrea-Wright-portrait-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Andrea-Wright-portrait-640x640.jpg 640w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1000px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1000\/1000;\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Andrea said: \u201cI really believe that Jim Henson was far more important to the screen fairy tale than has previously been explored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll my life I have been exposed to and loved Henson&#8217;s work, from <em>The Muppet Show<\/em> and <em>Sesame Street<\/em> to the movies and I want to recognise and celebrate his unique contribution to the fairy tale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHenson was a genius at sparking the viewer\u2019s imagination and mixing, sometimes even subverting, classic fairy tale tropes with inventive design and cutting-edge tech.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Wright&#8217;s book stands out as the first comprehensive study to fully re-evaluate Henson\u2019s career through the lens of fairy tales and challenges the notion that Disney is the only major creative force in the genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was given access to materials from the private <a href=\"https:\/\/www.henson.com\/\">Jim Henson Company<\/a> Archives to explore his distinctive methods. This allowed Dr Wright to look at letters, sketches, doodles, plans and scripts which gave unique insights into the creative processes that went on behind the scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile writing my PHD on 1980s screen fairy tales, I got in touch with The Jim Henson Company Archives and they sent me some information about <em>The Dark Crystal<\/em> and <em>Labyrinth<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome years later I got in touch with them again and asked if I would be able to visit to help me write the book and I was thrilled when the Henson family gave me permission to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Labyrinth<\/em> turns 40 this year and Andrea recently attended the Labyrinth Experience, an exclusive masked ball in London, where she met fans and signed the new book for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" data-src=\"\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Andrea-Wright-Presentation-1-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"presentation from Andrea wright about Jim Henderson\" class=\"wp-image-310422 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Andrea-Wright-Presentation-1-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Andrea-Wright-Presentation-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Andrea-Wright-Presentation-1-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Andrea-Wright-Presentation-1-640x360.jpeg 640w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/576;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She also hosted a short presentation about her research and book, describing the experience as the \u201chighlight of the year\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really want people to think about Jim Henson and his work a bit differently,\u201d she added. \u201cWhen people talk about screen fairy tales over the last century, the discussion has been dominated by Disney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile I don&#8217;t dispute Disney&#8217;s importance and reach, I want people to recognise that Jim Henson gave us many of the most witty, inventive and creative examples of fairy tales of the era.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official launch of <em>The Fairy Tales of Jim Henson<\/em> will be held at Edge Hill University Arts Centre on Wednesday 18 February, 7pm.
