The project team, made up of academics and practitioners from across a range of disciplines including performance arts, literature, wellbeing, health and social care, has developed a new evidence-based creative psychological therapy for treating depression.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the group behind the project, which includes staff from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/\">Edge Hill University<\/a> and the University of Salford, has been awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/pluralisticpractice.com\/2022\/10\/20\/international-conference-on-pluralistic-counselling-and-psychotherapy-prize-winners\/\">Senior Prize<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1wPnP9MOfeBtCrlPSuFYdncYJlK3iY5I4\/view\">International Conference on Pluralistic Counselling and Psychotherapy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last five years, the <a href=\"https:\/\/artsfortheblues.com\/\">Arts for the Blues<\/a> project has worked with hundreds of adults and children in schools and mental health services across the North West. Results from adults participating in the project showed a decrease in anxiety and an upturn in wellbeing. A pilot trial with 56 children suffering emotional or behavioural difficulties was similarly successful; 12 months after the intervention, there were sustained improvements in their quality of life, quality of sleep and overall wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/PHP_280219arts_conference_05-4-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Professor Vicky Karkou\" class=\"wp-image-75753 size-full lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/576;\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Professor Vicky Karkou, Director of the Research Centre for Arts and Wellbeing at Edge Hill University, said: \u201cArts for the Blues has already shown how it can have a tremendous impact, using a new approach to tackle a massive problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis fantastic award is recognition of the successful project work we have done over the last five years. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCreative psychological therapy can have a real impact on reducing depression and anxiety as well as improving wellbeing and quality of life, and we are excited to continue to develop this work in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Dr Joanna Omylinska-Thurston, Counselling Psychologist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmmh.nhs.uk\/\">Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust<\/a> and Lecturer in Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of Salford, is a co-investigator in this project and co-founder of Arts for the Blues. She explained: \u201cWe are delighted to receive this award and with the success of the project.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that traditional talking-based therapies exclude many people for whom talking therapy is not a suitable treatment; including those who struggle with verbal communication or don\u2019t have a strong command of English. The high levels of people who drop-out from primary care mental health services \u2013 calculated at 63% by <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.nhs.uk\/\">NHS Digital<\/a> in 2021 \u2013 show that other options are needed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy using a creative psychological therapy that encompasses movement, visual arts, drama, music, creative writing and talking, people can experience and express emotions, share with others, and develop useful techniques to use outside of therapy. We now hope we can continue to expand the project even further to help more people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\"
